What Is The Florida Certification Board?
The Florida Certification Board is the private regulatory body in Florida that oversees the certification of addiction counselors and other addiction treatment providers throughout the state. This board, a nonprofit group dedicated to ensuring the highest level of professionalism and ethics in the industry, sets guidelines as to the minimum standards of competence for addiction counselors. The goal is to ensure the quality of addiction services provided to clients by certified counselors for addiction and substance abuse problems.
Recovery Resources at The Touch Of A Button
As we continue to break technological barriers in today’s society, the boundary between personal, one-to-one communication and communication over “the cloud” has become blurred. To be sure, it is very important that counselors speak to their clients face-to-face in the treatment setting. After all, one of the cornerstones of successful treatment is the ability to connect and sympathize, or empathize, with the client. Trust is built through nuance, reaction and behavior; often, that does not come across when communicating through electronic means.
The Academy is Expanding to Delray Beach, FL
The Academy for Addiction Professionals is proud to announce yet another major expansion to our facilities. On July 29, we will be opening a second location in West Delray Beach, Florida to accommodate students from Palm Beach County and Northern Broward County. The new classroom setting will expand our reach to more students than ever before.
The Delray Beach location will begin with Monday and Wednesday evening classes from 6-9pm. Classes may soon expand to accommodate other days and times of the week.
Infection Control in The Treatment Setting
Infection control is one of the most important elements of a safe treatment protocol. With the proliferation of infectious disease associated with drug use, there is ample opportunity for infection within a treatment center – especially if the staff is not properly trained. Understanding the basic principles of infection control, as well as prevention, is crucial to keeping the facility and indeed the community from suffering the effects of infectious diseases.
The Link Between Substance Abuse and Mental Illness
The differences between substance abuse and mental illness are often blurred, especially because they are often treated as co-occurring disorders. Indeed, there is a significant cause and effect relationship between the two, as many mentally ill patients present substance abuse disorders and vice versa. While mental health facilities and addiction treatment facilities are often separate – with different staff and treatment modalities – there is no denying that substance and mental illness are intertwined. Indeed, differences and similarities of the two conditions are highlighted by separate pieces of legislation – The Baker Act and The Marchman Act. While similar in their wording, the two are quite separate.
Why Is The Baker Act So Important?
The Baker Act, also known as the Florida Mental Health Act of 1971, is extremely important because it lays the groundwork for the voluntary or involuntary emergency admission of those suffering from mental illnesses. By standardizing rules and regulations surrounding the commitment of qualified patients, much uncertainty in the mental health industry to that point was resolved.
