Substance Abuse / Addiction Education & Training in North Carolina

North Carolina is among many states whose addiction counselor licensing body participates with the Florida Certification Board to offer Alcohol and Drug Counselor or ADC certification reciprocity. Through the IC&RC, those who receive their Certified Addiction Professional designation in Florida are eligible to take the reciprocity exam and upon meeting all criteria receive their North Carolina equivalent designation. The Certified Addiction Professional education course, as taught by The Academy for Addiction Professionals, satisfies the training necessary to achieve reciprocity, however each local licensing board will have its own requirements that may or may not need to be met separately.

For out-of-state students, the Academy for Addiction Professionals offers a comprehensive        online course available 24×7. This course can be taken in part, or in full, online. Some jurisdictions will allow for the entire course to be taken by distance-learning while others will require some in-person training. Either way, please reference the course descriptions below to ensure that they broadly match the requirements for certification in North Carolina.

It is also important to note that only the addiction counselor courses – CAP, CAC and MCAP –  are eligible for reciprocity under the alcohol and drug counselor designation.

Whenever an out-of-state student takes courses with the intention of achieving reciprocity in another state, we suggest that they carefully examine the requirements of the reciprocal state licensing board and make a phone call to ensure the following:

  1. Certification standards in Florida meet or exceed those of the reciprocal state
  2. Courses can be taken via distance-learning at The Academy for Addiction Professionals
  3. North Carolina is indeed reciprocal with Florida via the IC&RC
  4. Any other specific requirements are fully understood
